Do I attend?

Two of my closest friend’s grandfather passed away. I met him once or twice over the last 20 years. They were both very close to their grandfather. The services are a 10 hour round trip drive away. I have contacted both of them to give my respects. Should I go to services? I was thinking of perhaps going to the wake so that I could drive down and come back the same day. Would my friends understand if I didn’t go?

I think that if you feel you should be there, and you are able to go – then the 10 hour round trip drive is worth it since this is a close relationship. You do not need to attend the funeral if you are able to get to the visitation. It would mean a lot to your friends to see you support them during this difficult time, but I am also sure they would understand if you were not able to be there.
